Turkey is one of the first countries taking steps towards nuclear energy in the 1950s. Today, a new start has been made with Mersin Akkuyu nuclear power plant project and then with Sinop nuclear power plant project. Nuclear energy which is rising on the agenda again, has different effects on social, economic and strategic issues. Nuclear power plants also are strategically important in terms of diversification of energy sources, as well as in meeting the rising demand for energy and reducing external dependence on electricity generation. It is also expected that power plants will contribute to Turkey's both global and reigonal status.
